THE SIGNIFICANCE OF AL-TAʻRIFAT AND ITS EXPOSITION OF TERMS RELATED TO THE QURANIC SCIENCES

Abstract

When we speak of the terminology of the medieval Islamic sciences, al-Jurjaniʼs scholarly achievement, al-Taʻrifat, is inevitably mentioned. This article deals with the scholarly standing of the medieval Eastern encyclopedist Sayyid Sharif al-Jurjani, the purpose of al-Taʻrifat in defining the Islamic terms, its advantages over other works of its field, the later works written in the same field, and the information on its manuscripts and modern editions.
