This article sets out the methodological foundations for studying the process of modernization in the socio-cultural life of the Muslims of Central Asia at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Relying on comparative-historical, source-critical and historiographical methods, it examines the factors and historical conditions that gave rise to the renewal (modernization) process,
the colonial policy of Tsarist Russia and its strategy of assimilation, and the activity of the Jadid enlighteners as the leaders of the national awakening movement. The article argues that the Jadids pursued two principal aims preserving religious and national values and selectively adopting the scientific and technological achievements of the West and that, although the movement was suppressed, it left a deep mark that remains relevant to the building of the society of independent Uzbekistan today.
