Developing the Oral Communicative Competence of University Students in Arabic through Task-Based Language Teaching

Abstract

Speaking is the skill in which Uzbek students of Arabic most often feel least confident. Many students with a solid knowledge of grammar remain silent in real communication because of limited practice, fear of grammatical errors and the absence of an Arabic-speaking environment. This article analyses the structure of oral communicative competence, identifies the main linguistic, psychological and methodological barriers to speaking among Uzbek-speaking learners, and proposes the use of task-based language teaching as a framework for developing speaking skills. A lesson cycle consisting of pre-task, task cycle and language focus stages is described, examples of tasks for different levels are given, and principles of error correction are discussed. An analytic rubric for assessing speaking based on fluency, accuracy, complexity, pronunciation and interaction is also proposed.
